Sleeping Angel

Okay, so tonight I had one of those moments that just make you feel like you've completely failed as a parent.

Today was trash day meaning it was the one day out of the whole week that we are allowed to water our lawn (due to drought restrictions). So after Kyle mowed tonight, Janelle and I helped him set up the sprinklers. Then we decided to let Janelle run through them for a little bit so she'd get really tired and go to bed quickly. At about 8:15 I brought our grassy little girl inside to shower and get ready for bed. Since Kyle was still working on the yard I told Janelle that I'd just say prayers with her tonight, but as soon as Daddy came inside he would come and give her a kiss. By the time Janelle and I came in, I was dying of heat. I was so happy when she was finally all in bed so I could get some water and lay on my bed with the fan on full blast. About 20 minutes later Kyle came in, and yours truly forgot to tell him to be sure and give Janelle a hug and a kiss. Kyle usually is really good about going to say goodnight to her on his own when he's gone, but we were both so hot and tired and happy to finally be lounging on our bed watching tv and drinking lemonade.

About an hour after I put Janelle down we see her little head pop into our doorway. When asked what she was doing out of bed, her face crumpled into this hurt little expression and then burst into tears. I then realized that I'd forgotten to tell Kyle to go into say goodnight to her. I felt SO bad! Poor thing. Mommy can't even remember to keep one tiny little promise. When I explained what I'd done Kyle picked her up and gave her a big hug and kiss and then helped her get back in bed. Within minutes she was sound asleep. It breaks my heart to think that she was there in her room waiting for her daddy that whole time!

Hopefully I'll be better at remembering those important things from now on!

Oh that is so precious! I can't believe she stayed awake waiting for that, so sweet! And then she went to sleep right away after getting her hug and kiss. At least it's something she probably won't remember so she won't hold it against you! Hey, you're very pregnant, you have a good reason!

I always feel so bad when I see little kids get their little hearts broken. Avary gets this little frown that you can tell she can't hold back and then bursts into tears. Obviously Janelle loves you both tons, and I'm sure she has already forgiven you :)

Laura,
What a cute story, Janelle is such a cute little tender heart. Thanks for sharing!

*sending baby birth wishes your way!*

Holy Cow Laura! I'm going to call DCF on you! Just kidding. It's a good thing kids have lousy memories and are very forgiving. You're a great mommy.
