At about 1 month Spencer discovered his thumb. He REALLY likes sucking on it when he can find it. It takes a lot for him to get it into his mouth. Usually I discourage it by pulling his thumb out and sticking his pacifier in, but I have to admit, it's pretty cute when he gets it in! Another funny thing Spencer has started doing is wanting to hold a blanket and touch his head when he gets tired. I understand the blanket thing because he is such a cuddly baby, but the head-touching is just funny! He doesn't even have much hair up there to touch! Silly kid.
It's been such a busy week already! Janelle started preschool on Monday. It's a co-op preschool with some other kids in a few of the McKinney wards, and this week was my week to teach. It actually went really well. The kids were, of course, very wiggly, but that was to be expected. I think the longest I stretched their little attention spans was about 10 minutes. Thankfully I'd overplanned for my three hours and we had plenty to do (thanks to google.com and their millions of sites for preschool lessons)! We learned about the letter S (the "snake" letter) and the number 1. My "Sally the Camel" song was a huge hit, for anyone that knows it! I figure the lesson was pretty successful since Janelle still remembers today the letter S and the sssssssssss sound it makes.
Last night my sister-in-law, Kayce, and her dad took us out for a yummy dinner at Saltgrass. It was so much fun seeing them and my cute little nephew, Axel who just turned one on Friday. (Unfortunately I forgot my camera.) We're glad they made the trip out here, and we can't wait to see them again in just a few weeks in California!
Tonight Janelle heads to Grandma Platt's house for a sleepover while Kyle and I take Spencer to the hospital tomorrow morning for his kidney evaluation. His left kidney is 17 mm when it should be 2-3mm in a baby his age. It probably means there is some kind of blockage in it preventing urine from getting to his bladder. His condition is called ureteropelvic junction obstruction (for those of you that want the technical name). Apparently it's actually commonly found in little baby boys. And it's usually always found in the left kidney, isn't that weird? I'm a little nervous about his test since they have to put him out for it, but the doctor assured me that he'd be fine. I think the worst part about it is that I can't feed him for 6 hours before he goes in, so he is going to be one grumpy baby! It's so hard not being able to explain what is going on to him. But, I'm sure he'll be fine. I'm just so grateful that they are able to find these kinds of problems these days and get them taken care of before they become a major health issue.
Anyway, that's been our busy week so far (and it's only Tuesday)! Hope everyone is having a good week!

Hey Laura. He is pretty darn cute sucking his thumb. When Hayden would do it, I would run and get the camera. Now luckily, he does prefer his binky. Good luck tomorrow. He will do just fine. I too and greatful for doctors and all the technology they have now to find these things out. I'll call you tomorrow to see how it went. By the way, Elisabeth really wanted Janelle to come over today but since Hayden has croup, I had to tell her no.
Sounds like you are keeping busy. I hope I can do a pre-school thing like that with Kathryn eventually, but who knows.
I hope everything goes okay with his kidney stuff tomorrow. I can't believe you can't feed him 6 hours before! Yikes! That will be interesting and he will be one hungry boy when it's over.
Good luck tomorrow. Poor little spencer. Is your apointment really early so that most of the 6 hours he can't eat he will be sleeping? I hope so.
I don't think it is so bad that Spencer is sucking his thumb. With one of my kids a pacifire sucker and one of them a finger sucker I prefer the fingers. It is a pain always making sure I have a clean pacifire with me all of the time. The fingers are attatched and I dont have to think about it. And I don't have to get up in the middle of the night and stick them in her mouth. But then again, I have not started trying to get Ayden to stop sucking her fingers yet. That might change my mind. Wow this is turning out to be a very long comment. I miss you guys and can't wait to see you in about 4 weeks.
Its cute to see Spencer sucking his thumb. Avary never took to a binky and started sucking her thumb when she was really tiny. At first I worried about it and would try to give her a binky, but she always spit it out. So, I let it go. I figured babies have so little control over anything in their lives, what's the harm of her having something that's totally in her control. And I know it made it so much easier for her to put herself back to sleep. Of course, she still sucks her thumb and I have no idea when she'll give it up, but I've heard that most kids do by the time they are five, and if they give it up by then it doesn't cause any problems. So, I'll keep my fingers crossed :)
That is cute that he likes his thumb. I hope all went well with the tests. Spencer is such a cute little guy!
Good luck with the tests! We'll be thinking of you!
Briton is just the same with the thumb sucking. Neither of my other boys sucked their thumb, so I was a little surprised. And just like you, I try to discourage it, but it is soooo cute. I had to laugh when I read that!
How did Spencer's tests go? How did they find that problem in the first place? Anyway, I hope everything went well.
Kristen
Kristen- The test went fine, we're still just waiting on results...still! They found the problem in my very first ultrasound at 23 weeks. So we've known about it for quite awhile. Your blog pictures were so fun to look at!
