My night at the gym

So tonight I went to exercise after Kyle got home and it must have been high school night at the gym. There were teenagers EVERYWHERE! Little twelve-year-old boys and girls mostly there with their parents all the way up to seniors there with their boyfriends and girlfriends. There were the teeny tiny girls working out in their little sports bras showing off their tan bellies. And the buff jocks all trying to lift more than they probably should.

My favorite was this girl who was obviously there with her boyfriend. She was just standing next to him while he was lifting weights. But every time he took a little break from lifting she would massage his shoulders. Awww, how sweet! Oh wait, GAG ME!! Honestly, did she really think she was helping him out by doing that?

Teenagers are so crazy! Was I really ever one of them? The weirdest thing is that I felt I wasn't that much older than most of them. (Even though I'm 9+ years older than most of them, was there working off my "baby fat belly," and had a ring on my left finger.) Wasn't I just 16? Time sure knows how to fly!

All I have to say...Janelle better not be like that!

I'm not one to stereotype though. There are definitely less-weird nice teenagers out there. For example, my sister, Erin. She's 16 and seems to be nice to everybody she meets. I'm pretty sure she doesn't work out at the gym half naked. There are also the teenagers that Kyle works with who are all nice people. Among all the crazy teenagers at the gym tonight , I did see a few non-showy, nice looking ones who seemed genuinely interested in exercising rather than standing at weight machines to socialize. So I give credit to all you teenagers out there who are nice to everybody, wear clothes when you exercise, and don't succumb to the cheerleader/jock image.

Laura,
I was just thinking about this the other day, and almost had a heart attack when I realized that my 10 year is next year!! It's a funny feeling when you surpass the age of the Missionarries, because for years and years they are older than you... and then one day, you realize they look like babies, and that's when you know that you have offically grown up. Where does the time go? I remember getting all primped to go to stake dances, being embrassed about my parents, going shopping with my gal pals at the mall... and it does not seem that long ago. Someday (and I kind of dread this day) we will be parents to teenagers, and then we will really feel old, that that day is only 10 years away... how scary is that. Here's to making sure your kids wear modest clothes, and talking about not massaging your b-friends sweaty shoulders at the gym. How discusting, I think I would have dry heaved behind the weights.

Laura, that is too funny. I can just picture it. I know how you feel about hoping Janelle doesn't turn out to be like that. I see teenagers like that all the time and get a panic attack that Ayden and Alex might be like that. I just pray they won't because you are right and there are many teenagers who are nice, respectable kids. All hope is not lost.

You are so good to at least go to the gym. Maybe next time they'll be scantilly clad 20 somethings that oogle at you!!! Don't tell Kyle I said that.

Seriously... even the nice, good young women in our ward are still silly teenagers! Life is much too important for them.

That's so funny. That's just one of the many excuses I come up with to NOT go to the gym anymore :) What's even sadder is that what you described totally reminded me of going to the gym out in Utah. Except instead of teenagers it was college students who should have been past that silly stage. Oh well, it's more entertaining than watching tv while you run on a treadmill I guess.

I was just reading on MSN about the cheerleading scandal in McKinney (aren't you guys in McKinney?) and thinking how disgusting teenagers are! I'm terrified of being the parent of teenagers. They just need a kick in the pants--most of them anyway.

Kristen- Yeah, those "nice" girls were from right here. That happened about two months ago, but it's just making national news. So crazy! It makes us want to leave McKinney before Janelle gets in high school!

Becki- Ha ha!!! Yeah, right, in my dreams!

Brianne- You're so right! Going to the gym in Utah is the same as here except with college kids! How funny!

To all- I'm scared out of my wits to have teenagers too! Especially girls. Boys don't seem to scare me quite as much. But I am sure going to be one strict mom!
