Today it happened...my worst nightmare (well, one of them anyway). It was my day off without my nephew and I decided to run some errands this morning with a promise to Janelle that if she was VERY good we'd stop at McDonald's for lunch (a very rare occurrence for us). She ended up being really good all morning so we invited my sister Rachel and her kids (Mark who she has on my days off, and Celeste) to Mickey D's. The kids had a fun time eating lunch and playing on the little playground. Then, as we were getting in the car to leave I locked my sweet baby boy in the car. It was HORRIBLE!! I totally panicked. I'm still not quite sure how the door locked and my keys were stuck inside, but it happened. Incidentally Janelle was stuck with me outside or she could have easily unlocked it for me. Fortunately, I was able to catch my sister before she drove off so I could use her cell phone (since mine was in the locked car with my keys). I was extremely lucky that Kyle could drop what he was doing, pick up the extra key at home, and come rescue us. Spencer was only locked in for about 20 minutes, but I swear that was the longest 20 minutes of my life. I was VERY grateful that the weather was so nice today and he didn't get too hot. Amazingly, he didn't cry at all, he just sat in his seat, sucked his thumb, and smiled at me through the window. NOW, whenever I go somewhere I'm going to be triple and quadruple checking that I have the keys before any kids are buckled into their car seats!

How awful! I'm sure that 20 minutes seemed like forever. Sounds like Spencer won't remember a bit of it though, he's so easy going. Don't feel bad - it's one of those things that will inevitably happen to all of us at some point.

I am glad things worked out ok. That is scary though. My Aunt kim has a funny story about locking my cousin in the car when he was a new born. If you are ever together you will have to ask her about it or I will tell you it but it is too long to write. Also, I just have to ask, did you disinfect Rachel's phone before you used it? :)

I actually have locked myself out of the house with Douglas inside. I didn't freak out too much b/c I knew Travis would be home in about 10 minutes. Had I not known that, it would be a nightmare!!

Jenni- No, I didn't disinfect the phone - all forms of disinfection were locked in the car with my keys. :) (And I was a little too panicked to think about it!) But the second I got home I washed my hands because McDonald's playlands gross me out. I probably couldn't be diagnosed with OCD about germs, but I'm sure I come pretty close. You're funny!

Oh Laura, how scary! I've thought about that before, and am so glad it has never happened to me. I always set my keys down on the seat next to the car seat while I'm buckling the kids in, which really isn't the best place. Since this happened to you, I'll probably start putting them back in my purse instead!

Oh, you poor thing! I am so glad it wasn't hot outside and that everything turned out okay. I would have panicked too. This story makes me want to make an extra car key and leave it at my mom's b/c I can rarely get a hold of Anthony but I can always get my mom.

Oh how scary!! I am so glad it worked out and he was fine. I would be freaked out too. It would have taken Chris an hour to go home and get the extra key.

Laura! What kind of a mother are you?!?!?! Just kidding. I'm sure this was a billion times worse for you than it was for Spencer. Isn't being a mom fun?

That's one of my worst fears too! Especially because we have only had one car so Shane would have to find a ride to get to me and save the day!!! I'm glad it worked out, but man that 20 minutes would've felt like forever to me too!

Hi Laura,
When Taylor was an infant I locked him in the car when I was at the train station picking up my sister. I FREAKED out!! I ran into the station and a kind employee found a coat hanger and helped me unlock the door by weaving the hanger through the window and hooked the lock and popped it open. Of course this was before cell phones and automatic car locks. SOOOOOO long ago. I know how you felt that day!! But you're a GREAT MOM!! I love you! Kay
