Bedtime Tales

We have 2 rules in our house regarding bedtime for Janelle.

1. If you're going to crack your door, then we're going to take your beloved purple and pink night light away (it's a major threat, trust me!).

2. No coming out of your room until 8:00am (I know to a lot of you that's really late, but she normally sleeps in until then or later, so it's not a big deal usually). Plus, she gets REALLY grouchy during the day if she wakes up earlier than 8.

Last night (and this morning) she broke both rules. She cracked her door after we'd gone to bed - which meant the second Kyle was up this morning she was up at 6:00 too. Mornings are Kyle's alone time, so he was a little perturbed at his unwelcome company. As a result of last night's rule breaking this evening we had this conversation:

Me: "Okay, what's going to happen if we find your door cracked open?"

J (with eyes rolling): "You're going to take away my light."

Me: "Right. And what time are you allowed to come out of your room in the morning?"

J: "8:00."

Me: "Right."

J: "But how am I supposed to know when it's 8:00?"

(I just love it when she asks me millions of questions right before bed that she already knows the answers too.)

Me: "Just look at your clock, and as soon as it says eight zero zero, you're free to get up."

J: "But MOM, I can't stay up that long, I'll get too sleepy!"

(Did she really think I meant for her to stay up all night long???? I can't even stay up all night long, no wonder she was a little confused. Oh the innocence of children, I just love it!)

Me (Trying hard to stifle my laughter): "Right. How 'bout this? Go to sleep tonight, THEN when you wake up in the morning look at your clock to see what time it is. And then if it says 8:00 you can get up, if it says seven something or six something, you'll just have to stay in your bed until the right time."

J (relieved): "Okay."

This is just the reason we got clocks for the boys bedrooms. Our rule is 7:00. The boys do pretty well, sometimes we have to remind them... I just tell them that they can quietly play or read in their rooms.

That's great! I can't wait until Kacey can follow rules and understand. She wakes up at 5:30 when Mark's getting ready for work....it is awful.

That is a funny story. We have battles over sleep in our house. Maybe we should start the 8:00 rule. My kids get up between 6:30 and 7:30 and I put on a show and head back to bed. At least until 7:30. No wonder I am ready for them to be in bed at 7:00pm. 12 hours must be my limit.

Emily- That's what I tell Janelle: read or play 'til it's time! It's funny, since this night, she knocks on her door in the mornings to make sure she can come out!

Rhonda- Oh wow, 5:30 IS early! You poor thing!

Bryn- 12 hours is DEFINITELY my limit...if not earlier! Seriously, around 6:30, I start going crazy and running around in circles until the kids are in bed. :)

Crystal- If you master teaching Douglas about time, call me and tell me how you did it, so I can do it with Spencer!
