Once upon a time our playroom/office had a regular ol' run of the mill bedroom closet. Shortly after moving into our house 4 years ago Kyle and I briefly discussed knocking the closet out to make the room bigger and putting a desk in. Having just moved into the house, I thought this project was well into the future. Kyle, on the other hand, decided one Sunday to immediately get started on the project and take his frustrations out on the inner walls of the closet. I heard the banging that fateful afternoon, came running in to see what was going on, and found huge hammered holes in the closet of our brand new house. A wave of emotions washed over me. I was 1/3 angry, 1/3 annoyed, and 1/3 amused. Thus began the years of labor on that darn closet. (Sorry no pictures of the before...I think I was trying to block it from my memory.)
Fast forward about a year and a half. The closet is still sitting half knocked out.
I'd had it with the mess.
Fortunately I lucked out and have the most amazing in-laws ever who were willing to come all the way from Utah and help us out one weekend. My father-in-law and Kyle finished knocking the closet out, rebuilt the ceiling and side walls, then textured the patched parts, and built a smaller closet we'd bought from IKEA. There is NO way we would have made it that far without them. (I know I have pictures of this weekend, but I can't find them anywhere.)
Life in that room was much happier after that weekend. We stuck a small temporary desk in to hold our computer and we finally had working storage again in the IKEA closet.
Fast forward again to March of this year (when we got our tax rebate). Again it was time to put a little more work into the on-going PROJECT Closet. My handyman of a husband built a desk from scratch...

...then we sanded, caulked, and painted it.
Just a few days ago we put up a little shelf over the desk.
It's all FINALLY starting to come together. After a very long FOUR YEARS.
Doesn't it look nice?
I can't decide if I want two shelves or to just leave the one. What do you think?
We still have to replace the carpet and fix the baseboards because the knocked out closet left huge patches of exposed foundation (a project for next year's tax-rebate). But once that's done this room will be FINISHED! I can already hear the angels singing. Hooray!

I love it!! He did a great job. I love the shelf too. You could probably put 1 more above that shelf.
Love, love, love it. Very nice.
I think it looks awesome! I love that closet too, and your hubby did a fantastic job on that desk! I like it just the way it is , but I like the more emptier feel of things. Less is always More in my book, but whatever you decide I'm sure it will still look great!
Wow! I love it! What a good idea. I love your house, or what I could see of it anyway when I dropped Ella off. I need an official tour. He he. Ella had SO SO SO much fun. She couldn't stop smiling and chattering all night and all today. We will have to get the girls together again soon. Thanks again. You are awesome.
Looks awesome! He did a great job on the desk.
I loved it! I think the one shelf looks good!
It looks really good! I'm sure it feels great to have it done now. I like just one shelf too, unless you need another to put stuff on.
Now that's one long DIY project. I'm positively abuzz for home office ideas, although mine won't include any hammers right off the bat. ;o)
Wow, I'm very impressed! It looks very nice, and I love that art you have on the desk! Excellent job.
I love the green walls with the white. Way to go Kyle and family! My vote is for one more shelf above and maybe coming from the right.
