Compromise

Ever since we were married Kyle has told me over and over that he wants a pet bird. I, for one, am not a big pet person...much less a bird person. And no matter how many times Kyle tells me about his adorable pet bird, Azul, he had when he was little, I'm not convinced. SO, as a compromise we decided to get a bird feeder and bird bath. We haven't gotten the bird bath yet, but Kyle got the bird feeder on Monday and put it up in our backyard. Mostly we get Finches, but we also have a big Cardinal that also tries to compete for the feeder, even though he's a little too big for it. By the end of the day Tuesday we'd already had to refill it. So the birds are definitely sharing their good find with their friends. Today I think I saw 15 little birds on the feeder and pecking the ground for seeds that had fallen. The kids seem to be pretty entertained by it, so I guess it was a good compromise.

This agreement has not been finalized; I'm still insisting that we have a pet bird someday. Also, let me clarify about Azul. I didn't have him when I was "little" I got him in the 4th grade, and though he was a parakeet, he lived until 2 weeks before I came home from my mission. Every day of his long and healthy life was a great one. He would take a bath in my hands, he'd greet me when I came home, he'd hang out on my shoulder, he'd even come into the shower with me. He was a GREAT bird, and someday I will have another.

Kyle, you and Jeff need to talk. Jeff had 3 birds, one of them talked and gave kisses... and Jeff is always pushing for one too (a bird, not a kiss!). I am just not into it, hate the idea of cleaning up seed off the floor, and the last thing I need is someone elses poop to clean up. But, the legend of Daisy and Luke (oh yes, from the Dukes of Hazzard) live on. (I forgot the name of the talking one...) I just keep using the excuse that Josh is allergic, even though i have no idea if that goes for feathers... So Laura, I'm with you on this one, and a bird feeder was a GREAT compromise. Maybe we will come over sometime and watch the birds with you!

Okay, so apparently it was a compromise for now. Birds schmirds. I'm with you Emily - I am NOT into cleaning up after pets...not even a measly goldfish who will die in a week. Plus birds are noisy! Come on over Emily! The kids will be entertained for a good 20 minutes!

I am not a pet person either, but I say give birds a chance. I had two parakeets when I was growing up and like Kyle says, they can be pretty sweet. People underestimate the bond between a bird and their master. I didn't think the mess was that bad either, and I was a rotten ten year old who only cleaned the cage when it was definitely necessary. Don't give up, Kyle! I'm on your side.

Ohhhhh yeah, the talking one's name was Prettyboy. I just remembered. And he would say "give Papa kisses!"

Laura, if you met Azul you would want a bird too. He was the coolest bird. I still have dreams about him and I will never forget the morning my mom called me to tell me he died. I cried harder for him then any person who has died in my life. Plus bird mess really is not that bad and when parakeet's chirp it is like music and it is really cheerful. I am just waiting for River to die so I can get a bird too. I hope you win Kyle!! Sorry Laura, I am usually on your side with everything but I just can't agree with you on this.

I'm definitely on your side, Laura. Those pet bird stories are somewhat endearing, but birds just give me the creeps a little bit. It's an irrational fear, but I just think they're going to peck my eyes out at any moment. Birds belong outside in the "wild". Plus, my friend Shelley (Jones), had a room mate in college with a pet bird and it was the most annoying thing and would wake her up early in the morning with all it's talking - she hated that thing. I don't know how messy they are as pets except that they have no control of their bodily functions, but I know for sure they're creepy and annoying. In short, I think you made a very good compromise.
