In response to Emily's blog here's Kyle's and my story of how we met. Check out her blog to view other fellow bloggers' stories on Sunday, May 6th. I had to do this early because we're headed to San Antonio tomorrow and won't be back 'til late Sunday afternoon and I didn't want to be late! Here it is, how I met Kyle P. Mammen:
I loved living at Regency Apartments in Provo, Utah. I had the best roommates and lived in a fun ward. Near Halloween in 2000 my FHE group planned a night to tell spooky stories. (I know, SUCH a BYU thing to do!) One of the guys in my FHE group happened to be Taylor Mammen. Taylor was a nice guy and lived with some fun roommates. He freaked us all out by telling us about his brother who had worked in an old mine as a tour guide when he was in high school who apparently had heard miner ghosts walking behind him once.
I distinctly remember thinking, “Hmmm…Taylor has a brother.”
I later found out his brother was in China teaching English. After that, I didn’t think anything about it. And by November of that same year, I was tired of guys, and just swore them off for awhile.
One January night, I decided to accompany my roommate, Andrea, to her institute class. I’d forgotten that my home teachers were supposed to show up that night. Andrea and I had a fun time and were surprised to find two guys sitting in our living room when we got home. One of the guys sparked my interest seeing as he was attractive, tall, and intelligent-looking (must have been the glasses). My roommates reminded me of the visit, so I sat down with them to finish their lesson. Apparently the one I thought was cute happened to be Kyle Mammen.
“Too bad, I’ve sworn off guys,” I thought.
A couple of months later our paths started crossing more and more - at church, home teaching visits, volleyball games, a friend's birthday party. About a week before we started dating he took one of my roommates to a work dinner. Knowing about my crush she asked him how he felt about Texans at that dinner. Since there were two of us from Texas, his response was, "Well, it depends on the Texan."
By this point the crush was mutual, and despite my embarrassment at my roommates big mouth (which I'll always be thankful for G!) I found out he liked me too and we started seeing more of each other. We actually had our first kiss before we’d actually been on a real date! The rest is history!
So there ya have it - a classic BYU fairy tale, but it worked for us!

Laura,
The Texas line was great! What a cute story, little did he know he would later live in that great state of Texas and survive wild storms like the one we had tonight! I guess your flower beds don't need a drink anymore, right? Have fun on your trip!
Yes, you SHOULD be thankful for my big mouth - all you fiddy fivers should! I totally remember that night with the scary stories. Remember how Taylor and Berton freaked us out later that night when they jumped on the balcony? Ah... good times.
Oh, so cute! I totally remember those guys jumping on our balcony too. I was amazed that they had managed to get there. Anyway, you and Kyle are great! I'm so happy to be able to keep in touch with you guys.
I don't think I really ever knew your story... or maybe I just forgot! Anyway... you gotta love those BYU stories.
And your first kiss before you'd been on a real date, impressive. :)
Hi Laura! I just wanted to thank you for encouraging me(along with Emily of course)to start a blog. I'm having a lot of fun. It was really nice getting to know you too the other night. You are a lot of fun. I love your classic BYU story. Have a great trip!
Aw, how cute!! That's fun!
that's so disgustingly cute. Love it!
I think I agree with Becki...but it's so fun to hear how giddy we were and still are I must admit when we tell 'our stories'! Have fun in san Antonio.
You forgot to mention the fact that Kyle also had the coolest sister ever and you REALLY wanted to marry him just so you could be sister-in-laws with her! Just kidding, if anything I probably hurt kyles chances but I am so glad you ended up together because you are the greatest.
Hi Laura,
I loved reading your story. I am Marcia's cousin-Melanie. I am having fun getting to know everyone through these blogs and everything. I love to read how people met and found each other! Thanks for sharing!
Melanie
G & Shay- I'd TOTALLY forgotten about Taylor and Burton climbing up to our balcony that night. How funny!!!
Jenni- I have to say, I lucked out in the in-laws department. What can I say? I love you all!!! And it definitely was a bonus finding out my boyfriend/future fiance had a sister my age. He scared me silly about you, but I didn't think you were anything but nice and fun when I met you! I guess you gave me your approval!
Melanie- So nice to meet you! I've met a few of Marcia's cousins, so I was trying to figure out if I'd met you, but I don't think I have. I check your blog out too sometimes!
All my other commenters - I know, our story IS disgustingly cute! What can I say???
