Happy Labor Day!

Ha ha, just kidding. As I was wandering around the house trying to make it decent before we have some company over tonight I started thinking about Janelle's birthday tomorrow. I still can't seem to get it in my head that she is actually going to be five. And then I started thinking, "Hey, 5 years ago today (almost to the hour), I was sent over to American Fork Hospital to be induced."

December 6th, 2002: After going to classes all day long, I had a doctor's appointment at 2:00pm (and right now it's 3:16 Texas time, so that's actually 2:16 in Utah, how very appropriate!). I'd had a normal appointment two days earlier and they realized my blood pressure was up, so I had to go to the hospital to be monitored for a few hours. Fortunately they sent me home, I was not ready for this baby quite yet! My doctor wanted to see me again a few days later to make sure my blood pressure was okay. (Hello? I was 9 months pregnant and taking a full load of classes and walking all over BYU campus, of course my blood pressure was up!) However by mid-morning I noticed something slowly leaking out of me (sorry for any guys reading this!). I just thought it was another weird pregnant thing, so I went to the rest of my classes. By the time my last class was over it dawned on me that maybe...just maybe my water might have broken. If that was the case it certainly wasn't the gush they'd talked about in my birth prep class. So I explained what happened to the doctor and sure enough he sent me right over to the hospital. There was no turning back. Our baby girl was coming. Fortunately, Kyle's intuition told him to stick my hospital bag in the car, so we were ready to head over there.

As we walked through the parking lot I remember thinking, "What in the heck are we doing? How in the world are we going to take care of a baby? Why, again, did we think we could handle this?"

But after a ton of poking and prodding, technically being in labor 21 hours, and 3 of the worst hours in my life pushing what they thought couldn't be bigger than a 7 lb. baby (she was 9 lbs.), Janelle Emma arrived at 5:04 in the morning (thank you Grandpa Bill for remembering to look at your watch and yell at us the exact time she was born from the hall because everyone else forgot to look)! I was so happy to see our firstborn little girl, but I was also more tired than I'd ever experienced in my whole 21 years. I'm pretty sure I passed out pretty quickly after Janelle graced us with her presence because I don't remember hardly anything about the few hours after she was born.

We're so glad Janelle came into our lives, even if it was a long night getting her here! More birthday pictures tomorrow!

Oh, I remember that day like it was yesterday. I can't believe it was 5 years ago. I was so excited when my mom called and said you were at the hospital being induced. We rushed and rushed to take care of things at home and then drove down from Logan as fast as we could because we were worried about missing it. We got there around 7 p.m only to wait 10 hours for it to actually happen. Your pushing exhausted me too and my arm was sore for a couple of days. But it was all worth it to see sweet little Janelle enter the world. It was such a spiritual experience for me probably even more so then my own kids births just because I was in the frame of mind to enjoy it and I will always be grateful you let me be there. Happy Birthday tomorrow Janelle!

Happy Birthday Janelle! And aren't you glad you're not in the same pain you were 5 years ago?

Oh Janelle, you were totally worth it (it's easy for ME to say that - I did no pushing). Have a great birthday, Janelle!!!

I love reading birth stories. You know, my doctor lied to me,too. He thought Miranda would be small but she almost wound up being 9 pounds as well. Hope Janelle had a wonderful birthday!
