I'm a Big Boy Now!

Spencer has decided that he's done with the high chair. It's amusing, really. He doesn't like to eat unless he's sitting by "Gigi" (Janelle) at the table. How did he get so big so fast? He thinks he can do everything that Janelle can. He loves his big sister, it's so cute! Whenever he gets up before she does in the morning, he walks into her room (after we open the door for him), climbs up on her bed, gets right in her face, and says, "Hi Bubba!" in a very high-pitched voice. It's so funny! We call him "Bubba" all the time and whenever Janelle greets him after he's taken a nap or she comes home from preschool, she always greets him with an affectionate, "Hi Bubba!" So I think he thinks that "Hi Bubba" is a greeting. He's such a funny kid!

We finally put all bottles away about a month and a half ago too, yea! I know, why was a 15-month-old still drinking bottles? Because his mommy wasn't ready to deal with that transition yet. He'd only been drinking out of a bottle in the morning when he woke up, so finally I decided to just put them away. Fortunately he didn't even seem to notice much of a difference once they were gone.

Cheers! Spencer's favorite item to steal out of the pantry - the syrup bottle. We usually keep it up high, but this morning it was on the kitchen table which is easily accessible to him now that he climbs on everything. He calls syrup, "waffuhz" (waffles).

So now that Spencer is adamant about sitting at the table with us, it's imperative that we get a new table. Every time he climbs up on one of those folding chairs, my heart stops and all I can do is hope that it won't collapse on him. We can't put a booster seat on our chairs, so it's a little hard for him to eat. The good news is that we found two tables at World Market that are perfect for our kitchen. And amazingly they're not too badly priced. But I need your help. One is black and the other is a dark chocolate brown. Originally I wanted a black table, but I'm beginning to realize that scratches and dents tend to be more obvious in black tables than stained tables. The other table is pretty dark too, it almost looks black from far away, but I think it might do better with damage control. But on the other hand, the black table and chairs are 30% off. At the same time, though, if I'm spending money on a table, I want to get one that will last awhile. So what do you think?

Black or brown???

Tough choice! I agree that darker will show more wear, but since they're both dark, I say go with the one you like the best.

I vote brown. It can be dressed up fancy or brought down to be more casual and comfy. I feel like a black table requires fanciness all the time. That is just my opinion though.

It's funny we call Mason Bubba too. The kids around here think it's his name... to funny!

Brown definitely. That black one looks almost exactly like our table (but it isn't from world market) and I have only had it three years and I am already ready for a new one. It is impossible to keep clean. Yucky finger prints and other smudges show all over it and it is chipping like crazy and it really can't be refinished. I like the look of black furniture but it is not worth it for the table.

I am really into browns lately... so that's my vote. :) For some reason, it looks a little nicer to me too... but maybe that's just because it's in a room that's all nice.

Wow, I'm out numbered - I was going to vote black. I have a dark brown table and like it except the stain has chipped from my kids (and husband) putting wet things on it. The best way to cover the chips is a black sharpie - but it would be less noticeable on a black surface. I think you're going to have the scratch problem with both tables and I say go with the sale.

One more warning about the black table, when hot things get placed on it, it turns it white. Even with hot pads sometimes. The items don't even have to be that hot. It is a pain in the butt.

very tough choice! My first choice would be what matches my kitchen decor the best...if you're going to keep it for a while. If I remember correctly you have the black toile curtains? But a brown table would work with those and the red walls...esp. if it's a dark brown. can't wait to see what you decide on!

Tough choice! Both tables look great, but I vote for the black table. Good luck deciding!

i wanted a black table too, but when i went looking-the salesman said black scratches so easy and shows up more. so i've been converted to brown. as long as it has a leaf, i'm all for it.
go dark brown, black may be out next year anyway.

Thank you Kristen, Sarah S., Jenni, Sarah E., Jen, Mindy, Emily, Marcia, Becki, and Hillary for your input! After careful consideration I think I'm going to go with the brown one. I think I just like it better. It's kind of got a distressed look to it, so I think it will do a little better with the wear and tear of little kids. We're going to wait until after Christmas to get it to see if any sales happen (such as chairs specifically). So as soon as we get it, I'll post pictures! Thanks again for your help!
