The last two years there has been an ice storm on Janelle's actual birthday. This year on her birthday the weather was the opposite. 80 degrees and windy. It was the right year for a warm birthday though because we had lots of things planned. Here's what we did for Janelle's birthday on Friday. She'd already had her friend and family parties, so we spent the day doing Janelley things as a family.
She started the day by picking out doughnuts and hot chocolate (despite the warm weather) with Daddy. Christmas sprinkle doughnuts are a definite favorite in our family.
While no one was looking of course, Spencer realized he was missing out on the hot chocolate and helped himself to some.
After breakfast our little princess opened presents. She couldn't stop smiling when she opened the "Island Princess" Barbie and movie from Grandma and Grandpa (it's definitely the newest rave in the Barbie world right now).
At 10:00am we rushed to the stake center for our December preschool field trip touring the Creche exhibit. The kids all behaved themselves really well. I was impressed! Josh and Janelle took off by themselves holding hands the whole time. They were fascinated as well as scared of the baby doll Baby Jesus. Janelle kept reassuring everyone that it wasn't the real Baby Jesus.
After a quick nap for Spencer we headed to the mall for Janelle's big ear piercing moment. I told her that she could do it when she was five, and she took me up on it. She did really well! She kind of freaked out the second she saw the gun (which, by the way, is way smaller than it used to be! I wouldn't even call it a gun really. Just an ear piercing contraption.) But the lady that did it was really good and so fast. Janelle only cried for about a minute and then she was all smiles as she picked out her first pair of non-starter earrings (pink and purple of course).
The lady gave Janelle the bear to hold while she did it and the whole time I kept thinking how dirty it was. Ugh.
"Ouchie!"
And now she's all smiles as she talks to cousin Ayden and Aunt Jenni about what she just did!
After our Claire's excursion we walked across the hall to Build-a-Bear where Janelle blew all her birthday money on a "Sugar Plum Fairy" bear who she named "Fluffy."

By around 5pm, Kyle and I were pooped, but the night was just beginning! We got to Santa's Village early so we could stake our place in line to see the big guy. It worked! We got there an hour early and were second in line! While Kyle and I took turns waiting in line we let the kids run around to see all the houses and take some pictures before the crowds hit.
Last year Spencer thought Santa was the greatest guy ever, he couldn't stop looking at him! This year...well...he was scared silly of him. We didn't even set him on his lap, he freaked out just being near him! Oh well. Maybe he'll be better next year.
Janelle, on the other, hand had been waiting all day for this moment! She wasn't sure what to tell him to bring her since she'd already gotten so much for her birthday so she settled on saying, "You can just bring me a surprise."
While Spence would have nothing to do with Mr. Claus, he quickly became Mrs. Claus' best friend as soon as he saw she had cookies. (The key to this kid's heart is definitely his stomach.) He even remembered to sign "Thank you," even though she thought he was blowing her kisses. Either works, right?
We were so lucky that Uncle Taylor, Aunt Kayce, Axel and Lousia were in town for Janelle's birthday. Janelle absolutely adores her cousins and was so excited to see them! After Santa's Village we met them for dinner at Papasitos (one of our favorite Mexican places). Janelle ordered the sopapillas - the perfect birthday dinner. Thanks Uncle Taylor and Aunt Kayce for a yummy dinner!
After a huge day, we promised Janelle she could sleep next to the Christmas tree. She conked out about 5 seconds after her little five-year-old head hit her pillow.
Now that we're all birthdayed out, we're ready for Christmas!

What a marathon of a post. Nice. I forgot that Taylor and Kayce were coming your way. How fun you got to see each other.
That picture of Janelle sleeping in the living room with the tree reminded me of the time we were there for thanksgiving and Hillary was sleeping in the living room and the fire alarm went off and she was screaming that the tree was on fire. Anyway it doesn't sound very funny but it was.
What a birthday! I still can't believe that you have a 5 year old Laura.
