Max and Ruby

Have you ever seen "Max and Ruby" on Nick Jr.?

It's about these two bunnies who are brother and sister. Ruby (the big sister) is always mothering and bossing Max around, while Max always has other ideas on how to have fun and does not appreciate being treated like a baby. Yet, he still likes to be around his big sister.

My kids are on different levels when it comes to TV shows. Janelle is past all the preschool shows and Spencer is most definitely not into "Angelina Ballerina" and "Hannah Montana." But "Max and Ruby" is the ONE show that both of my kids will willingly watch together. Why? Because Max and Ruby are EXACTLY like Spencer and Janelle. If there were ever a cartoon created about my kids, it would be this show.

For example, this afternoon Janelle has two friends over who she is having a "tea party" with. They all dressed up in fancy clothes and were nicely playing in the play room. After he figured out what they were doing, Spencer brought me his dragon costume so I could help him put it on, then joined in on the tea party. Of course there were exasperating sighs of frustration coming from Janelle every few minutes because he was "bothering" them, but he was completely oblivious and happy to serve tea. Poor kid, he REALLY needs a brother.

*As I'm typing this Spencer is running past my room going, "Ha ha, you can't catch me, it's MY magic wand!" And Janelle is quickly chasing after him whining, "Give it back, it's MINE!" It's just making me laugh. :)

Speaking of my kids...I thought I'd share some funny quirks about them.

Janelle:
  1. Janelle is afraid of the dark. She had a really bad nightmare a few years ago, and it scarred her for life. As a result, she will NOT go to sleep without a rather bright night light. I have no idea how she can sleep in such a brightly lit room. Fortunately her special "purple light" as we affectionately call it has turned into a great bargaining chip. If she gets out of bed more than twice, she loses it for the night. And trust me, it's major trauma when it happens. :)
  2. Janelle is also VERY afraid of fire. I have no explanation for it or no reasoning as to how this fear came to be, she just is. She hates shows or rides with pyro-technics.
  3. Janelle hates buying her lunch at school. Which is weird, because when I was in elementary school I loved buying it when I got the chance. Maybe the food was better when I was a kid, or maybe she's just got a very refined palette and is morally opposed to cafeteria food, but she ALWAYS wants me to make her lunch. Usually I don't mind, I'd rather her eat the stuff I give her anyway, but on those rushed mornings, it sure is a pain!
Spencer:
  1. Spencer HAS to sleep in the complete dark. I tried putting a tiny night light in his room so he could see to go to the bathroom at night, but he screamed until I took it out! Talk about extreme sibling opposites.
  2. Spencer STILL prefers to drink milk warm.
  3. When I go in to wake him up in the mornings Spencer almost always has a blanket over his head.
  4. Spencer loves to run around the house singing, "I'm the best, I'm the best, I'm the best!" I have no clue how he came up with that...unless of course he's been talking to Uncle Daniel. Hee hee! Just kidding!
And this is one about both of them...My kids are both prayer nazis. (Is it sacrilegious to say that?) If we forget sometimes, they will remind you and remind you and remind you until you remember. I suppose we've taught them something right.

Boy do I love my quirky kids.

My only question about Max and Ruby (b/c its a staple in our house too) is where the heck are the parents?

I always hated to buy lunch, too. My mom would make the greatest lunches, cold artichokes, brie and tricuits, corned beef on rye, etc. No one would ever trade with me, but I didn't care. In HS, though, bag lunches were pretty unpopular, only a serious social outcast would bring lunch. Fortuneately the cafeteria had pretty good choices. Miss you guys! Love, Dad aka Grandpa
