Emergency Preparedness: 72-Hour Kits

During the month of March, our ward's home-teaching lessons were supposed to consist of checking up on everyone's 72-hour kits. Our ward (and stake) have really been emphasizing having them recently. Kyle and I decided it was time to get off our lazy rear ends, and get it done. So last night during "Battlestar Galactica's" season finale we crammed all our emergency supplies into 2 bags. Fortunately Kyle has a HUGE REI backpack that holds almost everything, plus we have an additional backpack for extra food. The biggest problem we ran into was packing things for our kids. You're supposed to have clothes, shoes, jackets, diapers, etc. for all your kids. But kids grow out of things so quickly that you really have to rotate them every 6 months rather than once a year. So we decided to just throw in clothes that fit them now and try to be good about rotating them whenever we go through clothes. As for Spencer, we decided to forego trying to pack any diapers and clothes for him just because he is growing WAY too fast for us to keep up with. In an emergency we'll just grab his diaper bag which has everything we need for him anyway. For a list of essential 72-hour kit items you can go to the church's Provident Living website. Even though our home teachers probably won't show up (they hardly ever do), we're prepared!

Great Job! We've got our food 72hour kits done we just don't have the clothing, toilet paper and the other stuff. We need to get going on that.

Wow! We really need to do that too. All we have is the food part together. Also I love the new look of your blog. How did you do the pictures at the top. It is really cute.

Good for you Laura. I half-way have our 72 hour kits done. I need to add the food. A good idea I heard once was to take out your 72 hour kits each conference and try on all the clothes, rotate them if necessary and also eat the food in them and replace it. Since I haven't put the food in yet I plan on trying to do that this weekend with conference. Another tip I was told was to have a back pack for each person (of course if you have young kids that doesn't really work) and to wait until October to buy them b/c they go on clearance. I got 4 really nice back packs for a total of $12.

Our ward is doing the same thing. Actually, our bishop challenged us to have ours ready by March 31st! We already had the food part, but it seriously needed to be updated. So sunday we finally made a list and figured out what we needed to get and tonight we'll go get it and put them all together again! And yeah... I'm not even worrying about Hannah because of how fast she grows. I might throw in some baby cereal, but that's it for her.
