Rainbow Bridge Excursion
One day my parents, my brother, and our family took one of the speed boats out to Rainbow Bridge. The Najaho Indians originally called this place "Nonnoshoshi" - which means "rainbow turned to stone" and is the largest natural bridge in the world. The Navojos considered this place very sacred since they considered rainbows to be the guardians of the universe. Hikers are asked to observe this reverence since it is a national monument and to hike the trail with respect to the environment. 20 years ago you didn't even have to hike up to the bridge, you could take your boat right up to it. However, Lake Powell has gone down quite a bit since then, so now you have to hike it. We didn't care, it was beautiful up there!
This boat ride out was a good 2 hours from our houseboat site, so it was a big trip for our munchkins. They did surprisingly well. Spencer LOVED being on the speedboat, and even took a couple of naps on the ride to and from our destination.

This is "Hole in the Rock" - the site that Mormon pioneers lowered horses, cattle, and eighty wagons in January of 1880. You can hike up there too, but there was no way Janelle and Spencer were going to handle two hikes in one day, so we just checked it out from our boat. Next time!
The hike up to the bridge.
Here it is: Rainbow Bridge in all it's glory. The picture doesn't do it justice.
And here's my little big brother.
Look, no kids!!!
Janelle totally crashed on the way home, I thought this picture was hilarious, wedgie and all!

I totally remember driving the boat right up to it. It sure looks different with no water.
Such cute pictures! Janelle's going to love it when you pull the wedgie pic out in 10 years in front of her boyfriend...haha.
Cute pics! My mom use to live on the Navajo Reservation, my Grandpa was the Sheriff there. ;)
I think the wedgie picture is so funny!
love the pics, love the vacate memories, wish we were brave enough to take our kids on such a cool trip!!
So jealous! Janelle better not have a boyfriend in ten years.
I am already wanting to go back next year. I think it is about the greatest place to just relax and enjoy some sun.
