I LOVE the summer Olympics. I love swimming, diving, men's gymnastics...but my all time favorite sport to watch during the Olympics is the women's gymnastics. Maybe it's the 12-year-old gymnast still inside me, but I LOVE it! Don't try to get ahold of me tonight because I will be glued to the tv. Woo hoo! Go USA!

It is fun to watch, eh. OK, do you really think that tiny thing on China's team is REALLY 16 y/o? There's no way she's older than 13.
So I totally fought my body last night and stayed up to watch it because I just couldn't miss it! Definitely my all time fav. to watch too! I felt bad for the US, but I think even without the mistakes, China would've won. Can't wait for the other competitions!
Chinese people are really small. When I first got there I tried buying long underwear in a size "small" since that's what I am here. I mean, good heck I'm only 5'3. The Chinese women working in the store kept saying, "No, no, no, no." And pointing to the large. I was intrigued so I bought the small and the large. The small fit on my body pretty snugly and the sleeves were totally 3/4 length on me!
I could see her being 15 turning 16. But I wouldn't be surprised if she was a little younger.
Wasn't Bela Coroli (sp?) so funny though? Outright accusing them of falsifying her (and her teammates) age.
Duchess- I agree with Celia, she might possibly be 15 turning 16, but to me she looks 10!
Sarah- I know me too. Stayed up WAY too late. I'm paying for it today!
Celia- That is so funny! The Chinese definitely have the advantage with their small bodies in gymnastics. Yes, Bela Karolyi was a crack up! He is hilarious!
After I wrote my comment I thought, hmmm, I should clarify. There is a large range of sizes. I was surprised at how tall some of the Chinese were, but there were some tiny people as well. Oh, and the large that I bought? The arms were BARELY long enough for me.
Kyle, where were you in China? And were you there with ILP? I lived in Hefei, Anhui. Pretty much smack dab in the middle of the country.
That was Laura, not me who made that comment above. (Just wanted to clarify.)
Celia, I did go with ILP. I taught at the school in Wuhan, which is about 200 miles west of Hefei. In fact I was there during the 2000 games in Sydney. It was great, they canceled our classes every time some "important" competition was going on.
I'm the same way w/the gymnastics--I can still remember some of my favorite routines from the olympics. My favorite ever was Daniela Silivas' floor routine in the Barcelona Games. I recorded it and watched it a million times.
But couldn't they show it a tad bit earlier? Come on.
We stayed in the Wuhan dorms once when we were traveling down to Yangshuo/Guilin.
Matt found an article today that said that a Chinese Newspaper printed that girl's age as 13 last November. The newspaper's online publication had that article completely removed after the hubbub over her age, but apparently someone somewhere has it archived as proof. So, she's pretty much most definitely underage. Probably now 14 going on 15 at the oldest.
I knew it. Of course they're not doing anything about it though.
Celia, it sure was nice to be smack dab in the middle of the country where almost every train passes through. The best was the Express to either Beijing or Shanzhen. In fact, I broke the rules, bought a re-entry Visa and stuck off to Hong Kong for a week. It was just too easy to do!
I hate to say "I told yah so" but such it is. I just read the same article, too. I also read the story about the little girl who sang the Chinese national anthem wasn't cute enough for TV so they had a cuter one lip synch. Are we really surprised China would lie about the age of their star athletes in order to win?
They're very, very much into keeping up appearances. The girl lip sinking didn't phase me at all when I heard it. When the kids had to give speeches for anything, a party member wrote it and the kids had to give it as though they wrote it themselves.
We were lied to time and time again at our school. I think they often just told us what we wanted to hear and then came back later with "maybe it won't happen the way we said it would". I can just see them later saying, "Maybe she really was only 13..."
